University of Juba VC calls Juba Teaching Hospital “graveyard”, seeks to take control

In a recent online post, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Juba has appealed for control over Juba Teaching Hospital (JTH).

In a recent open letter to President Salva Kiir, Professor John Akec described the teaching hospital as “a graveyard for desperate patients, as opposed to a place of healing and recovery”.

He appealed to President Kiir directly for control of the hospital.

“Kindly put Juba Teaching Hospital under the management of the University of Juba in order to save thousands of lives”, he wrote.

JTH is a 580 bed facility in Juba, and is the only referral hospital in South Sudan. Given the lack of adequate healthcare facilities outside the capital, it is the country’s main point of contact for referred treatment.

The teaching hospital is directly funded by the central government through the Health Ministry, supported by the RMF, UN and other NGOs. Despite such support, however, the hospital is poorly equipped lacks basic medical supplies and equipment.
