South Sudan FA condemns shirt burning

Kelly Abale, Juba

South Sudanese football fans may have seen national player Taban Manyang Makoi post a photo of a burning team shirt on Monday.

On his social media, New Zealand based Manyang expressed frustration at exclusion from the South Sudanese first team.

However, in a statement released on 3/11 the South Sudanese Football Association (SSFA) condemned Manyang’s actions.

The SSFA noted that the “action is not impudence to the SSFA only, rather it is to the whole country as well”. Given the centrality of the national flag to the team shirt, the SSFA have suggested it is paramount to burning the South Sudanese flag.

"We the entire administration of the SSFA is strongly condemn this harsh exploit”, noted Secretary General Anthony John Lauro.

The condemnation comes as the national team prepares to face Uganda in the African Cup of Nations in Kampala. South Sudan is currently bottom of their group, losing to both Malawi and Burkina Faso.
