Following Egyptian President Al-Sisi’s day visit to South Sudan, spokesmen from both nations have declared bilateral talks a success.
In statements released late yesterday, it is clear that issues surrounding South Sudan’s development, Central and North African stability and peace dominated discussion between the Presidents.
Al-Sisi expressed his readiness to support the Revitalized Peace Agreement, and pledged full Egyptian support in alleviating the challenges facing South Sudan. He emphasised Egypt’s eagerness to transfer experience, technology and materials to South Sudan across a number of sectors. This, he stated, would strengthen bilateral cooperation and widen prospects to develop economic and trade relations between the two nations. President Kiir agreed, noting the vast potential for collaboration in civil, social and military fields.
This coincided with talks concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a longstanding topic of contention in the region. On the part of both Presidents, there was mutual agreement as to the importance of achieving a binding and balanced legal agreement on the GERD’s operation. It was agreed this must coincide with strengthened cooperation between all Nile basin states.
On such regional matters, President Al-Sisi emphasised South Sudan’s firm commitment to regional solidarity, and the mutual responsibility of Africans to seek African solutions to African problems.
As the day drew to a close, President Kiir thanked his Egyptian counterpart, and both parties affirmed their commitment to sustained cooperation.
