via Radio Tamazuj, Malakal

Authorities in Upper Nile State have made their first arrest in connection with the a spree of high profile murders in Malakal town last week.

On Wednesday, SSPLA Brigadier General Arop Okeio and Upper Nile peace activist Juliano Ambrose were shot and killed whilst returning from the market in Malakal town.

Following the incident, the identity of the perpetrators seemed unclear.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Nyok Bol, the acting state police commissioner, said a soldier has been arrested in connection to the killings.

“A day after the incident, we arrested a soldier suspected to have been involved in the killing. The soldier is a bodyguard to the slain general. In the military, when a boss gets into a problem, the immediate person to be held accountable is the guard,” he said.

He added, “Investigations are now ongoing. In our preliminary findings, it was established that the guard left his boss to an unknown location without prior permission on the evening of the incident. He also had a misunderstanding with the general.”

The commissioner vowed to inform the public as to the details of the investigation once it finished.

Ajak Awer, the Secretary-General for Upper Nile State, also confirmed an arrest had been made. He noted the investigation committee was still looking into the incident.

Both the Commissioner and the Secretary General assured reporters that Malakal town is calm, despite recent violence.
