Following the closure of polls yesterday afternoon, incumbent President Yoweri K Museveni appears to lead the race according to early projections.
In electoral commission figures obtained by The Daily Monitor, Museveni appears set to stay in office for a 7th term with 65% of the vote. Meanwhile, opposition frontrunner Bobi Wine trailed with 27.56%.

The race remains tight, and opposition hopeful Bobi Wine has already hinted he may reject the result on the basis of electoral irregularities.
Such allegations are not new to Ugandan politics, with the incumbent President having been accused of voter fraud since he took power in 1986. The Daily Monitor reports a number of incidents in Kampala metropolitan area - a traditional swing seat - and numerous ballot box thefts across the country.
Most recently, Bobi Wine has reported harassment and intimidation by Uganda security services as he claims he is 'toppling a dictator'.
The counting process continues. As CEPO head Edmund Yakani urged yesterday, Uganda must adhere to safe, stable and fair electoral politics.
