Nilepet construct Bentiu highway for new refinery

Juba

Nile Petroleum, South Sudan's national oil and gas corporation, has announced the construction of a highway linking Bentiu with a number of other towns and cities in South Sudan.

Built in preparation of the opening of South Sudan's first local oil refinery, Nilepet have described the construction of the road as addressing the issues of local fuel consumption and regional demands for refined oil.

South Sudan has historically suffered from poor internal transport links, impacting the ability of domestic and International land trade. It is hoped that road will help connect the oil rich region of Bentiu with national depots in Warrap, Western Bahr-el-Gazal and Jonglei states.

Nilepet have reportedly partnered with African Resource Cooperation (ARC) to build the road. The highway is also due to serve as a feeder road to important urban centres on the route out of Bentiu.

In an official statement, Nilepet have emphasised the project's positive financial implications for the country more widely.

'Engineer Bol Ring Mourwel is working tirelessly to revive economic renaissance by improving oil production, exploration and exportation. It is a matter of time for South Sudan to be fuel self reliance and export surplus to neighboring markets', the company have said.

The start of the highway's construction comes at the end of a difficult few weeks for Nilepet, following a number of accusations of corruption and illegal practices by communities in Bentiu.
