Shirikat
In a press release seen by the South Sudan Friendship Press, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries has announced plans to kick off its national livestock vaccination campaign.
Beginning with a conference on 28th January at Shirikat cattle camp outside of Juba, the campaign will feature a variety of deworming and vaccination activities for local farmers.
Featuring speeches from local chiefs, NGOs and the Governor of Equatoria State, it is hoped that the launch will provide the campaign with momentum to succeed nation-wide.
This year's campaign follows on from a number of successful efforts by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO). With over 65% of South Sudan's population relying on cattle for survival, their health is essential.
'The cattle are so important to me. I use them to work on my farm, and to fertilize the farm. My children rely on the milk. If we have enough cattle, we can sell some to buy other essentials' says Kiir Mawein, a 30-year-old cattle keeper from Aweil.
It is hoped that the vaccination campaign will see the majority of the country's cattle population immunised against key diseases by the end of the year.
