Following the recent death of Major General Solomon Chol Michar, veteran of South Sudan's independence wars from 1983 to 2005, a number of senior officials in Upper Nile state have taken steps to commemorate his life and passing.
Born in Jonglei state, Chol fought alongside Kuol Manyang Juuk in Bor as a 2nd Lieutenant from 1983. In the years that followed, Chol stood as an advocate for South Sudanese refugees in Eastern Equatoria and Kenya. Active in the Padang community, Chol was integral in helping South Sudan's Lost Boys achieve education and attain stability both in and out of refugee camps. As an integral member of the SPLM, he was appointed Minister of Wildlife in 2006 and later Director of the 10 state + 3 administrative area.
His eulogy has described him as 'a man of the people who regarded everyone as important, despite age, gender or tribal affiliation'.
Commemorating his life, Upper Nile state government officials led by Deputy Governor James Monybuny yesterday received a high level delegation from Juba to visit Pigi county, the birthplace of Chol.
Speaking to press, the Deputy Governor said Chol will be laid to rest in the Jonglei canal area and will forever be known as a true son of Padang Community, patriotic and revolutionary.
The delegation visiting Chol's burial place included state government officials, ministers, advisors and local community leaders of Padang Community in greater Upper Nile State region.
Those arriving from Juba included Major General John Maluith, division II commander of Upper Nile state, and Major General Chol Atem, the state police commissioner.
All were received by acting Pigi county Executive Director, Savoni Majok Baguot, as well as church leaders and local community figures from the Pigi canal areas.
