South Sudan's National COVID-19 Taskforce has announced the end of the country's partial lockdown. Restrictions have been in place since early February, limited social activities, business openings and religious services.
In a statement signed by Chairman Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, the Taskforce have suspended all forms of lockdown following review of nationwide infection data.
Despite this, Abdelbagi urges all citizens to remain aware of the disease and continue following public health measures.
'The public is hereby cautioned to continue to observe the instructions of the health authorities particularly washing hands, mandatory wearing of facemasks, social distancing, avoiding crowded places and reporting all suspected cases by calling free toll number 6666', the statement reads.
The change in lockdown rules comes amidst falling deaths and cases across South Sudan. In the 24 hours following the statement's release, the country recorded only 16 new COVID-19 cases. This brings the cumulative number of infections to 10,416, 10,148 recoveries and 114 deaths.
