SPLA-IO Deputy Military Spokesperson, Col. Paul Lam Gabriel, told press today that a group of unknown armed men attacked a SPLA-IO cantonment site in Lowereng, East Equatoria, killing 5 soldiers.
Among those killed was the commander of the cantonment site, his deputy, and a colonel. The SPLA-IO have reported the other deceased as privates.
'We don’t know who attacked, but a force came and attacked, burnt houses, and killed five of us,” Col. Paul Lam has said.
'One of them, a brigadier responsible for the cantonment, died and a woman has also been killed plus three other soldiers so this is what happened and it is not good because we are now in the program of peace'.
Although the identity of the assailants remain unknown, the SPLA-IO have described the attack as a violation of the R-ARCSS.
'People should have not killed themselves. What pains me a lot is that Eastern Equatoria is a cold place and it has had no problems. Since the implementation of this agreement, we did not hear that there is a problem between SSPDF and IO or between SSOA and IO. Even with civilians, nothing', Lam noted.
The SPLA-IO have urged the Joint Defense Board (JDB) and the Ceasefire & Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring & Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
